Açaí vs Pitaya: Which Bowl Is Right for You?
Updated June 9, 2026 · 2 min read
In short
Açaí is an earthy, antioxidant- and healthy-fat-rich purple berry. Pitaya (dragon fruit) is a brighter, sweeter pink fruit with more vitamin C and almost no fat. Neither is healthier overall — pick açaí for a richer, dessert-like bowl and pitaya for a lighter, fruitier one. Banana Berry in Coral Gables blends both to order.
Açaí vs pitaya: the short answer
Açaí and pitaya are both blended into thick, spoonable bowls, but they come from different plants and taste different. Açaí is an earthy, slightly chocolatey Amazonian berry that's higher in healthy fats and antioxidants. Pitaya (dragon fruit) is brighter, fruitier and a touch sweeter, with more vitamin C and almost no fat. Neither is "healthier" overall — it comes down to taste and what your body wants that day.
What is açaí?
Açaí (ah-sah-EE) is the deep-purple berry of an Amazonian palm. The pulp is naturally low in sugar and rich in heart-healthy fats and anthocyanin antioxidants, so it's blended frozen and unsweetened into a thick base. At Banana Berry our Organic Açaí Bowl and the Açaí Power smoothie both use organic açaí.
What is pitaya?
Pitaya, or dragon fruit, is the magenta flesh of a climbing cactus. Compared with açaí it's brighter in color, higher in vitamin C and fiber, almost fat-free, and a little sweeter — closer to a kiwi or pear. It's the base of our Detox Dragon smoothie and is available in any pitaya bowl or superfood cup.

FAQ
- Is açaí or pitaya healthier?
- Neither is clearly healthier. Açaí has more antioxidants and healthy fats; pitaya has more vitamin C and less fat. What you add on top — granola, honey, nut butter — affects the final bowl more than the base you choose.
- Does pitaya taste like açaí?
- Not really. Açaí is earthy and slightly chocolatey, while pitaya is sweeter and milder, closer to kiwi or pear.
- Are açaí and pitaya bowls vegan?
- The fruit bases are vegan. At Banana Berry, ask for no honey and our Organic Açaí or Pitaya Bowl is fully vegan.
